PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE -- In a 1936 essay entitled "I'll Stay in Canada", humourist Stephen Leacock wrote "I never have gone to the James Bay; I never go to it; I never shall. But somehow I'd feel lonely without it."

His poignant tone continues to resonate with the vast majority of Canadians, who never venture more than a few hundred kilometres north of the American border.

WHITEHORSE PREVIEW VIDEO (1:42 min)

Yet it piques our imagination - if not our curiosity - to realize that this country offers expanses reaching well past James Bay, far beyond the northern horizon.

And that may be the ultimate purpose for holding this year’s CSWA conference in Whitehorse: It provides the best reason yet to check out that horizon and what the view of Canada looks like from there.

A dedicated group of people based in the Yukon and at the CSWA office want you - as participants at this event - to get a good look...During International Polar Year no less - a once-in-every-50-years opportunity.

Our conference team has been working hard since early last year to make the occasion a memorable one.

  • They want you to learn about this region's long history, which was highlighted by the land that rose during the last ice age, making it possible for the first aboriginal settlers to make their way onto this continent.

  • They want you to see the effects of climate change firsthand, as frozen soils begin to reveal secrets they've held for thousands of years.

  • They want you to appreciate the challenges and rewards of writing about science in a part of Canada that may seem remote, yet is integral to our national character.

In fact, this event is nothing less an historic occasion for the Canadian Science Writers’ Association: the first time we have gathered as members in a venue north of the 60th parallel.

We are extremely pleased to have reached a point in our development as a national organization to finally venture into this frontier.

We undoubtedly would feel lonely if we did not do so.
